Before parenthood, couples head to 'babymoons'

Babymoons have been a travel trend for several years, according to Frommer's, the vacation guide publisher, even though the term is unfamiliar to many. It is generally defined as a last chance for parents-to-be to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect before life is overrun with diaper bags and sippy cups. A babymoon can also be taken after the baby is born as a time to bond with the infant.

When Is My Baby Ready To...

There may be very clear guidelines for much of newborn care, but once my baby was out of the first stages of infancy, things became a lot murkier. Suddenly I had a million new questions, and the answers weren't exactly obvious. "So, is it okay... now?" I found myself wondering every few weeks. Will it be safe when she reaches a certain age? Weight? Developmental stage?

In this article, pediatricians -- experienced moms themselves -- share what you need to know about safe sleeping, eating, playing, and more.

How much sleep do kids need?

Bedtime routines are important for children. Regardless of age, regular schedules and bedtime rituals greatly impact our ability to obtain sound sleep and function at our best. When it comes to children, this is especially true. Establishing and maintaining good sleep habits helps your child fall asleep, stay asleep, and awake rested and refreshed. It may also prevent future sleep problems. Good sleep habits can not only take the stress out of bedtime, but can help make it the special time it should be for you and your child.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for bedtime, and as always, there is individual variation. Your child is unique. If your routine is working, then it is probably best for you. That said, some approaches work better than others, and the following guidelines have been shown to be effective.

Get the white out of baby's first foods, pediatrician says

Concerned about increasing childhood obesity and growing rates of diabetes, some pediatricians want to change how babies eat.

Pediatrician Alan Greene is encouraging parents to abandon white rice cereal in favor of more nutritious brown rice cereals or even a homemade brown rice mash or vegetable purée. He is concerned that babies are getting hooked on the taste of highly processed white rice and flour, which could set them up for a lifetime of bad habits, such as a weakness for cakes and cookies.

Children can travel well, but it takes patience and planning

Parents often leave for the holidays with visions of warm family dinners, twinkling lights, mugs of cocoa.

But they frequently return home in a state of near-collapse, worn out by screaming meltdowns, endless airport delays and, for the truly unlucky, in-flight sickness.

While no one can guarantee a perfect holiday, seasoned travelers say a little preparation and a good attitude can help smooth any turbulence.

Children's Fears: Simply Spooked or Serious Phobia?

Halloween tends to bring scary subjects to the surface -- especially for kids. A normal part of life, childhood fears typically arise out of an upsetting experience (like being bitten by a dog), hearing or seeing something disturbing, or they can simply be conjured up in your child’s imagination.

Fears that don’t seriously interfere with your child’s life -- the fears your little one learns to cope with -- can actually be a healthy thing. They cause a child to become more cautious and resilient when dealing with life's difficult situations. But when does a fear become something more? Those that prompt kids to significantly alter their lives are considered phobias. For instance, concerns that make your child want to avoid places (like school) or daily activities (like bathing, sleeping, eating) should be addressed by a mental health professional.

Here, seven common fright-inducers -- and how to help your child overcome them.

Stop Fighting with Your Teen

I won't pull any punches: I hate fighting. I'll do anything to avoid confrontation, even if that includes pretending I don't notice the half-eaten bagel with cream cheese that has been sitting on my daughter's nightstand for two weeks. But it turns out I'm not doing my kids any favors. Fighting — done fairly — delivers a huge payoff: a stronger relationship with your child, and the confidence that comes from knowing you've equipped her with emotional survival skills that will last a lifetime.

CyberSafe: Protecting and Empowering Kids in the Digital World

Most kids have their first digital experience with e-mail. There isn't an accepted "right" age for a first e-mail account, and there are many variables to consider. For young kids, e-mail accounts can be tricky because they don't always understand the ins and outs of their use.

The anonymity of the online world is where the danger begins and keeps on going. As adults, we usually recognize the dangers of being separated by a computer even when the person on the other end is known to us. At the same time, how tempting it can be to shoot from the hip and just rattle off an unedited, uncensored e-mail! That does occur, doesn't it? If we as adults recognize how tempting it can be to send those sorts of communications and how difficult it can be to tap into the restraint to not respond when we receive an inflammatory communication, imagine how difficult it is for a developing child at any age.

Using movement to raise happier kids

A stream of Mozart wafting from your baby’s CD player may be soothing, but the jury’s still out on whether classical music makes babies smarter. You may want to add a bit of Beyoncé to your baby’s playlist, because the latest research shows that it’s the beat, rather than melody, that gets infants going.

Babies coordinate their movement to the tempo and rhythm of music, and they find this even more engaging than hearing people talk.

How to Stop Sibling Struggles

The first grandchild on my husband's side, my eldest was occasionally treated like the second coming of the Messiah, or pretty close to it. Really, I'm surprised trumpets didn't announce his arrival at family gatherings. So when his little brother arrived, it rocked his world. He went from being the center of the universe to something more akin to Pluto.

Having a baby and a toddler is only half the problem, though, I discovered a few years later: These kids are going to get older, and pretty soon you have a toddler and a kid to deal with.

Here's how to handle both sibling stages.

Your baby’s brain needs a few weeks to develop before he’s able to smile at you for real. Looking forward to that or wondering whether it’s already happened?

Becoming a parent means less free time and more stuff to lug around, but it doesn't have to mean less running. Taking your child with you on a run can be liberating—you don't have to wait for your spouse or a sitter in order to get out the door—if you have a baby jogger. To figure out which joggers are worth a spin, we had five parents (and seven kids) test eight jogging strollers.

These four standouts will help you share your workouts with your little one, without missing a step.

How can you stay calm? The key is to ask the right questions so you and the teacher can create a plan to help your child.

8 Signs of a Healthy Baby

Even if you fear you don't know the first thing about newborns, after a few weeks with your own little darling, you start to hear a difference between his hungry and tired cries. You know how he prefers to be rocked and burped. You grow more confident about your parenting skills. If it weren't for the exhaustion and the hormonal overload, you'd feel like you have everything under control. But all it takes is a small, paranoid though -- is my baby eating enough? Is all this crying unusual? -- and you can easily fall into a spiral of anxious concern..

So you search around online and read the comforting, vague phrases: "Healthy babies exhibit a wide range of behaviors, appearances, and temperaments." Question is, how do you know that your baby is happy and developing normally? To help reassure you, we've assembled a list of indicators to watch for that prove an infant is doing just fine.

Tough Enough? How parents can help their kids handle criticism

Wise parents help their children -- not with false soothing, distractions or praise -- but with probing observations. For instance, you might say, "I noticed yesterday that Sally didn't want to play with you. Do you have any ideas of why that might be?" With some guidance, the child might respond, "It could be that Sally is having a bad day. Or it could be because I didn’t share."

Learning to accept criticism and evaluate one’s behavior empowers a child for life. Read the full article here.

The first day: Kindergarten, high school and college are big transitions -- how you can help them prepare

No other milestone provides a snapshot of a child's life like the first day of school. It's a tangible reflection of the child moving away from the parent and into the adult he or she will become. Unlike graduation, where success is celebrated and emotions are welcomed, starting a new school requires a tougher face.

Before the little fish can swim in the big pond, there is work to be done and decisions to be made: what to bring to school, how to get there and who will become a friend. Yet there are ways to prepare the child, whether they are anxious, confident or a mixture of the two.

Cach Cach Tweetie Blanket

Founded in 1984 cachcach began with the unique concept of the “Pocket Buddy.” Each child’s garment came with a stuffed toy attached to the garment by a string and stowed in the pocket. Since the 80s the brightly colored character-themed prints with the matching pocket buddy has evolved to meet the fashion trends of the new decades. But to this day, cachcach is still remembered for its pocket buddies and animal motifs. Today’s cachcach is known best for its use of rich fabrics, textures that are visibly soft to the touch, charming dimensional motifs, and of course, whimsical animal characters.

Vaccines: Fact and Fiction

Most moms don't have to look far beyond their circle of friends to find a family with serious concerns about vaccines. It's not difficult to understand why. For one, it can be torture to watch your child get jabbed repeatedly with a needle. Combine that discomfort with a steady stream of negative publicity -- celebrity diatribes, alarmist news and Internet reports, ripped-from-the-headline TV shows -- and the wariness seems warranted.

Yet underneath all the debate and impossibly good intentions (after all, everyone hopes to be doing the best for their child no matter how or whether they immunize), there are some solid facts about the benefits of shots that cannot be ignored.

Baby names with some bite

You can watch the "Twilight" movies and read the books, but why stop there? Thousands of Americans are giving their babies "Twilight"-related names.

Bella, the name of the love-struck heroine of Stephenie Meyer's vampire novels, hadn't quite cracked the Social Security Administration's list of the top 200 girls' names in America when the first "Twilight" book was published in 2005. Today, it's at No. 58, higher than Miley, Kingston or Maddox. Cullen, the last name of Bella's vampire beau, Edward, is in the top 500 boys' names for the first time in more than a century.

Baby Allergies: Prevention & Treatment Tips

If you or your partner has an allergy, your baby is at increased risk. Her allergy may be completely different, though; if you're allergic to pollen, your child might react to cats. But even if you and your spouse never itch or sneeze, your kid isn't necessarily in the clear. Childhood allergies are on the rise, and many young sufferers have no family history. Some experts think our superclean, ultra-hygienic lifestyle plays a role. If kids live in an almost-germ-free bubble, the theory goes, their immune system will pick fights with other invaders, like foods or household particles. Of course, we're not suggesting you abandon hand sanitizer -- which is why we asked experts for practical advice on how to manage the types of allergies that affect infants most.

Don't call him 'Mr. Mom:' Single dads fight for acceptance

At times, being a single dad can be a lonely existence.Single moms get a lot of attention, be it media fretting, specialized social services or heroic portrayals in movies.

The reason is simple: There are a heck of a lot more of them. But single fatherhood is likely to become a lot less lonely in the years to come. Although they are the exception right now, there is evidence single fathers are growing in ranks as societal stereotypes about child-rearing soften.

Get that Baby to Bed!

Even after your baby starts snoozing for long stretches, usually by 6 months or so, at times he may regress to those early days of caterwauling at 10 p.m. or 1 a.m. or 3:27 a.m. (not that you're watching the clock or anything). And while you have your bedtime routine -- whether it's bath-bottle-book or some version of the cry-it-out method -- down pat, you're hardly in the mood for Goodnight Moon at two in the morning. How, HOW, you wearily ask the gods and the ceiling fan, do we get the baby to go back to bed so we can all get some rest?

At long last, we've got the answers.

You take your baby to the pediatrician for her regular check-ups, vaccines, and at the first sign of a fever. You keep her away from runny-nose friends and steer clear of the sun. Is your child's food allergy real?

Food allergies are often misdiagnosed, leaving many parents needlessly worrying about dangerous reactions and painstakingly monitoring food, said Dr. Leonard Bacharier, director of pediatric allergy and immunology at Washington University School of Medicine. "It's a big, ugly issue. We deal with it every day."

A key reason, he said, is many parents rely solely on the results of blood or skin tests, which are increasing in use because of easier access. Blood tests measure IgE antibodies, chemicals present during an allergic reaction. Skin tests involve measuring hives that result from pricking the skin with food extract.

But experts agree blood and skin tests are not reliable. Read the full article.

Soothe Your Baby

Your baby is crying and cranky (hmmm, you are, too), so you rub her back and belly—having read so much about the calming effects of infant massage. But with a little more stimulus, that massage can really do wonders in soothing your infant.

Fussy, stressed infants who receive massage plus “multisensory stimulation,” including talking, singing, eye contact and rocking, show lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, according to research from the University of Illinois at Chicago. But babies who receive massage without other interaction or no massage show increased levels of cortisol—and stress.

Baby Napping Basics

Naptime at our house used to be a recurring mystery: When would Lucy go down today? I'd be on the lookout for clues and remain suspicious through dim lights, books, and droopy eyelids. When I could no longer stand the suspense, I'd plop her in her car seat, where she'd anticlimactically drift off like it was no big deal. I knew Lucy should be napping in her crib, but she hated to, so I was willing to do whatever worked. Thank-fully, sleep experts say this isn't all that bad. "There's no one way to get your baby to nap, so you have to try lots of different things," says Mary Ann LoFrumento, M.D., a pediatrician in Morristown, New Jersey, and the author of Simply Parenting.

If you've ever experienced naptime drama, read on for mom and expert help.

Tips for safe bathing

Bath time can be a fun, special time to share with your toddler. It's also a time for caution, though. The first and most important rule is this: Never, ever leave your toddler unsupervised, even for a minute. Children can drown in less than an inch of water. Gather all of the supplies (soap, towel, etc.) you'll need ahead of time. And if the doorbell peals or the phone rings, and you feel you must answer it, scoop your child up in a towel and take him with you.

Keep these bathing tips in mind to keep your little one safe while he gets squeaky clean.

Paging Dr. Oz: His five favorite health tips for parents

Besides heart surgery, my great professional passion is working with a group called HealthCorps—a program that places energetic, healthy young people in high schools, where they help students live better, healthier lives. Its message stresses mental resilience and the notion that even kids have the power to control their bodies and the world around them.

My wife, Lisa, and I have tried to impart that message to our own four children, and I stress it to my viewers on The Dr. Oz Show. We parents have to be role models. I've distilled what I've learned along the way into these five ultimate health tips for kids.

Baby Vision: What Your Little One Sees

All of your child's other senses -- touch, taste, smell, and hearing -- are ready to go at almost full power at birth. But vision takes some time to develop. For instance, months will pass by before your baby can see in color. For now, she sees in only black, white, and gray. And eye movements are pretty uncoordinated at the beginning, which means a newborn's eyes might move independently of each other. As your baby grows, her eyes will get stronger.

Read on to find out when and what she sees, plus how to keep those baby blues healthy.
