Baby-Care Basics: Essential Skills for Every Brand New Parent

It used to be a new mom spent several days in the hospital after giving birth learning how to take care of her baby. But today, many mothers go home exhausted 48 hours after delivery. “The teaching that used to take place during those longer hospital stays isn’t getting done, and mothers are too tired to read the discharge instructions the hospital gives them,” says Suzanne Corrigan, M.D., clinical associate professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “If it’s just you, your husband and the baby at home, you need all the help you can get.”

As a new mom, you can circumvent this trend by asking for help, both at the hospital and at home, and by reading up before you are discharged, starting with this baby-care primer. But don’t get so anxious and bogged down in the practical details of caring for your newborn that you don’t savor the special moments that happen every day. Relax and enjoy your time together.

Baby crazy: How did a nation become obsessed with Shiloh, Suri?

Celebrity babies are hot.

Today's fathers are choosing to be more involved with their children

Dad, you've always been great. But now, you're so much better. The proof is in the amount of time you spend with your kids.

The typical dad devotes 6.5 hours per week to his kids, according to a University of Maryland study. That's still not as much as mom's 13 hours, but it's more than double the time fathers spent with children 30 years ago.

Obviously, much of this societal shift comes from the proliferation of dual-income households. Dad isn't the breadwinner like he was a few decades ago, so duties are split. In addition, three times as many dads stay at home than they did a decade ago. That number still has room to grow: A University of Missouri-St. Louis study found that 25 percent of married women out-earn their husbands.

Kids' clothes straight from the runway

Los Angeles kids are dressing more like parents these days as celebrity small pints set the fashion. In the last few years, the obsession with dressing little kids like Dogtown skaters, Malibu moms and even Upper East Side socialites has hit a new, Suri-high level.

More clothing companies than ever are producing what the rag trade refers to as mini-me clothes on every price level.

Baby Bucks

In a climate where everything from box office hits to traffic stops makes headlines in blogs, newspapers and celebrity weeklies, it comes as no surprise that the more substantial life events of an A-lister -- say, the birth of a baby -- constitutes news.

Time and again, the if-you-build-it-they-will-come approach to covering the birth of celebrities' babies has worked, but why? While there are some fans who might rush to an online baby registry and buy a token of congratulations, history proves that far more people will rush to a newsstand and part with a few hard-earned dollars so they may catch a glimpse of Celebrity X's little miracle.

Is it possible to train for the perfect birth?

A growing number of mothers-to-be are choosing to be active throughout their pregnancies, undergoing sometimes punishing regimes in a quest for the perfect - quick and easy - birth. The move is supported by doctors - this year medical charity The King's Fund claimed half of all maternal deaths in childbirth involved women who are overweight or obese.

But can exclusion diets, protein counting, self-hypnosis and strict gym plans guarantee moms-to-be a pain-free labor?

This article interviews three women who went into training for motherhood to describe their pregnancy and then reveal whether the birth went to plan.

Packing Smart for Famiy Trips This Summer

Starting June 15 -- just when we're taking off on long-planned vacations -- American Airlines will charge $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag, assuming you are flying domestically on a discounted ticket and are not a top-level frequent flier. So what's the good news? First, we do have summer and time with the kids to look forward to. We've got plenty of ammunition now for why our teenage daughter can't bring every pair of sandals she owns on vacation this summer, and why the 4-year-old can't bring his entire collection of dinosaurs, including the big ones.

We're all going to have to pack smarter -- even the kids. Read the full article!

Celebrities and their baby business

Most expectant parents, concerned about the possibility of a miscarriage, wait until after the first three months of pregnancy to share the news with family and friends. But discretion is nearly impossible for those in the media spotlight.

In late December, Nicole Kidman, who had a miscarriage during her marriage to Tom Cruise, denied that she is expecting a baby with husband Keith Urban -- only to confirm it a week later. Jennifer Lopez, who welcomed twins with husband Marc Anthony in February, announced she was pregnant in November following denials by the couple.

Even so, attempts by celebrities to keep their pregnancies private doesn't stop celebrity magazines and gossip Web sites from issuing reports to the contrary.

Parents juggle kids' wants, needs

Parents in all income brackets have the shaky economy on their minds, but in this spendy era of the $900 baby stroller and the ultra-birthday party, are they resisting the urge to splurge on their kids? Many acknowledge there's a blur between "necessities" and "luxuries" for their young ones as prices soar for everything from gas to milk. Indeed, some parents will always be able to afford designer-wear for toddlers and fancy cell phones for grade-schoolers, but more average earners are considering scaling back.

Hey, baby

There are many factors to consider when naming your baby: family history, unfortunate nicknames that could result and, perhaps most important, what celebrity comes to mind when people hear the name.

Which got us wondering: Does a celebrity's popularity affect how many babies are named after him or her? To find out, we looked at a few years' worth of statistics from the Social Security Administration database -- which ranks the most popular baby names, from 1 to 1,000.

Here are some of the notable ups and downs.

Forget cutesy -- decor for baby grows up

Oh, baby, baby, baby.

Forget the cutesy teddy bears, and ditch the washed-out pinks and barely blues. Nurseries are going chic.

Matchy-match newborn nursery themes are being replaced with more modern and sophisticated motifs, while traditional pastels have morphed into bold brights and geometric patterns.

And parents-to-be, once obsessed with making the space perfect for a baby, are now opting to create a longer-term decor, one that not only blends with the rest of the house but also will be suitable as their newborn grows into toddlerhood and beyond.

Kiddie couture: Baby clothing is growing up

Designers of women's wear are increasingly turning their attention to the youngest consumers, one retail sector that hasn't hit a wall. Sales of clothing for children younger than 3 spiked by 11.3 percent last year, while apparel sales overall rose only 2.9 percent, according to NPD Group, a market research company in Port Washington, N.Y.

Good baby-product buying takes a strategy

Just because baby superstores have products stacked to the ceilings doesn’t mean most of what they stock is worth buying. In fact, parents should pass by much of it.

That’s the advice coming from Heather Maclean, who has made a business of cutting through the clutter of baby merchandise. The mother of three’s new book, “The Baby Gizmo Buying Guide,” doesn’t list branded items but guides parents through what kind of merchandise to buy to handle everything from sleepless nights to playtime during their child’s first years.

There is a lot to mull, given that $8.9 billion in baby products sold last year, according to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, a trade group for the industry.

This article presents some excerpts from an interview with Maclean, who also helps run the Baby Gizmo Web site.

Baby Branding: Naming Little Tykes Today Can Be As Stressful As a Marketing Campaign

Somewhere between cooing over ultrasound images and registering for a bottle warmer or Diaper Genie, the debate begins.

Emily or Ethan? Christopher or Chloe?

Relatives lobby for old family names. Parents flip through books, checking into the old Irish meaning of the name Liam.

It used to be easier than this. But many of today's parents are planners. They track their baby's expected weekly progress in the womb through books and Web sites, and are enrolled in parenting classes by the second trimester. Coupled with the weight placed on first names in modern America -- your neighbor isn't Mrs. Johnston, but Shirley; a cashier looks at your credit card and calls you Doug rather than Mr. Smith -- choosing a name can be one of the most stressful prenatal tasks.

Splish Splash

We make sure what goes into our children’s bodies is healthy, but what about all those lotions, creams and washes that go on our kids? Alan Dattner, MD, New York holistic dermatologist, and founder of www.kiwimagonline.com , says, "Infants and children easily absorb chemical substances into their skin, and these are incorporated into their growing tissues." According to Dattner, ingredients like mineral oil (clogs pores), artificial color (potential allergen) and talc (lung irritant)—all common additives to mainstream children’s body care—should be avoided. "Exposure may be in small amounts," he adds, "but it can continue year after year, and we don't know the long-term effects."

Multiple babies call for more household planning, flexibility

For most parents, hearing that they are having multiples is "joy mixed with terror mixed with moments of calm," says Patricia Malmstrom, co-author of "The Art of Parenting Twins" and director of Twin Services Consulting, a support Web site for parents with multiples. After absorbing the news, Malmstrom says, many parents-to-be find themselves "scrambling to find balance in the midst of a very unstable feeling."

Much of that scrambling centers on how to keep a household running smoothly - or just running - with two, three or more babies crying at once.

The Truth About Pregnancy Dreams

Catching a decent night's sleep when you're pregnant is tough, especially when your nights are filled with hormonally charged dreams that can be comforting, scary, or just plain weird.

Katie Smith, of Denver, recalls being awakened by the kookiest dream in her first trimester: "I was running down the freeway with my jogging stroller, chasing after a pickle. I finally caught up with it in the pickle shop and took it to the counter, where I realized I didn't have a quarter to pay for it. As I searched the stroller and my pockets for money, I woke up and went to the refrigerator to eat some pickles."

Indeed, Moms-to-be have a lot on their minds, and it surfaces during sleep. Here's what those wild visions might mean.

The Magic of Play

Today we call unstructured fun "free play." But many kids don't get nearly enough of it anymore, a growing chorus of child-development experts is warning. It may seem obvious that kids need to play. Trouble is, a lot of what passes for play lately doesn't quite cut it. "Playing" organized sports, for instance, isn't child-led or open-ended -- two key traits of true play. Neither is "playing" computer games -- and today's kids spend more time with computers, TV, and game screens than on any other activity except school and sleeping. Even babies miss playtime while watching "brain-building videos," going to classes, or being dazzled by toys that do the talking (and thinking) for them.

Nobody's suggesting that playtime should be another "to do" penciled on a parent's list and programmed into a child's day. Just the opposite, in fact. Providing it is as easy as stepping back and encouraging what comes naturally to your child, age by age.

Babytalk Baby Tracker

Your baby probably already has his own little routines -- you just might not be able to see them yet. That's why Daniela Montalto, Ph.D., a pediatric neuropsychologist at New York University's Child Study Center developed this daily log exclusively for Babytalk readers. Use it to keep track of your little one's sleep, feeding, playtime and more. All you have to do is circle or "x" out the blocks of time for activity. For example, if he naps from 7am to 8am, circle or cross out those numbers. For time that begin on the quarter or half hour, simply write in "15" or "30" in the space above. In a couple of weeks, you should begin to see some patterns emerge -- and to make it easy on yourself, print out several copies now so you have enough to last you at least a month.

The EcoMom party has arrived, with its ever-expanding “to do” list that includes preparing waste-free school lunches; lobbying for green building codes; transforming oneself into a “locovore,” eating locally grown food; and remembering not to idle the car when picking up children from school (if one must drive). Here, the small talk is about the volatile compounds emitted by dry-erase markers at school.

Perhaps not since the days of “dishpan hands” has the household been so all-consuming. But instead of gleaming floors and sparkling dishes, the obsession is on installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, buying in bulk and using “smart” power strips that shut off electricity to the espresso machine, microwave, X-Box, VCR, coffee grinder, television and laptop when not in use.

The 411 on Hiring a Nanny

The minute you hire a nanny, you're running a small business. And with that business come costs and legal implications that go beyond the base salary, including some you may have already thought of (like health insurance) and others you may not have considered (like gas money). Keep in mind that the information in this article assumes that you're paying your nanny legally. Though this will cost you more day to day, it's a lot cheaper than the legal fees you'll face if the IRS finds out you've been paying someone under the table.

Yummy mummies: Are moms under too much pressure to be hot?

It wasn’t all that long ago that baby boomer mothers embraced the soccer mom icon, with her elastic waistband jeans and big, bulky sweaters. That stereotype was lampooned on “Saturday Night Live,” which did a spoof on “mom jeans.” (“Because I’m not a woman, I’m a mother.”)

But then came Victoria Beckham and Kelly Ripa and Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow, svelte stars who had babies and then poured themselves back into their size 00 knickers within a matter of weeks. Suddenly it wasn’t good enough to have clean hair and spit-up-free clothing. As a 21st-century mother, you have to be ripped and buff and hot.

However, the relentless media focus on celebrity moms such as Demi Moore and Kate Moss is fueling the YM trend, making ordinary moms feel inadequate when they can’t attain the six-pack abs and cut biceps of the Hollywood crowd.

8 Super - Smart Discipline Fixes

Does discipline for babies sound Draconian?

If so, you're probably confusing discipline with punishment. But effective discipline is not about punishing; it's about teaching children to manage their behaviors and emotions so they grow into self-reliant, resilient individuals. It begins in infancy, when you gently nudge your baby onto a regular feeding and sleeping schedule. It continues when you later allow her to soothe herself to sleep or to entertain herself for brief periods. It extends into the toddler years, as you encourage her to flex her autonomy within safe limits. And it becomes paramount in the preschool years, as you nurture your child's emerging character and conscience.

Celeb babies are in the spotlight from Day 1

It's one thing to share wedding bliss with the world. It's quite another, many stars learn, when a newborn is the object of media attention. The first shot of a celebrity infant can mean big bucks — for stars, if they choose to sell images of their children; for paparazzi, if they don't; and for media publications either way.

With stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Nicole Richie and Jamie Lynn Spears all expecting, the want-to-see in 2008 is going to be major. "It's the fundamental attraction of celebrities," says Larry Hackett, People's managing editor. "You see them as surrogate friends and neighbors, so when they go through these big life moments, you can't help but be curious as to what their kid looks like."

Many stars try to get ahead of the paparazzi by arranging first photos to be published in magazines. Patrick Dempsey, Marcia Cross and Tori Spelling went that route last year.

Hollywood's Most Influential Infants

What comes to mind when you hear the name Shiloh? Chances are it's not the Civil War battleground or the hard-luck dog.

Most likely, it's the oft-photographed child of A-list couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, better known by their tabloid moniker "Brangelina." That wide-spread awareness has earned the A-list kiddie a spot at the top of Forbes' first-ever look at which Hollywood babies have the most effect on pop culture.

To determine which tykes were tops, Forbes looked at both Web presence and press clippings for more than 50 A-list offspring (5 years old and younger) over the course of a year. Then, with a whittled-down list, Forbes reached out to Encino, Calif.-based polling firm E-Poll Market Research for both awareness data for the kids and consumer-appeal rankings for their celebrity parents.

Sophia, Aiden top list of baby names for 2007

After three years of Emma, it's Sophia's turn at the top of the class roster, joining Aiden for his third stint.

A growing Hispanic population might be credited for some name climbers on BabyCenter.com's list of the most popular baby names for 2007, to be released today. Sophia has more of a Latin or continental appeal than its proper English successor, Emma. Xavier, Sebastian and Isabella are on the rise, while newcomers to the top 100, to be released next month, include Lila, Maria and Adrien.

But if anything sums up the Web site's latest hit names, it's a hunt for distinctiveness -- a trend that has rendered the annual list way more volatile in recent years than it used to be 10 or 20 years ago, back when Michael could sit securely on his throne for decades.

Experts have seen an influx of untraditional names and alternate spellings, to the point where "unique" has become conventional.

Holiday Travels with Baby

There's nothing more exciting than making the holiday rounds with a new baby to show off — for you, anyway. Your little one may have a different idea. Help him maintain an even keel with these stay-cheery tips:

Be greedy. Well-meaning relatives will be happy to meet the new addition and, of course, will want to hold him. To avoid hurt feelings, say something like "I'm going to hang on to him for now. The truth is he gets overwhelmed by crowds, so we're going to take it slow," suggests Claire Lerner, the director of parenting information and resources at Zero to Three, a national child-development organization in Washington, D.C.

Take a time-out. You may be enjoying chatting up cousin Carla over a leisurely dinner, but if your baby starts working his way to a meltdown, retreat from the crowd for a short time. Take him into a dark, quiet room and softly reassure him. You'll be surprised how quickly he can relax and recharge for the party's second half.

Go with his flow. Sure, you may always put him down for his morning nap at 9:15 and nurse him every two hours on the dot. But when you're traveling, those home routines just may not work. He may sleep a little more (or, God forbid, a little less), or he may feel like nursing more than usual just for the comfort of it. Or he may stick to his schedule like glue... who knows? The point: "Do whatever works in the moment," says Lerner. You'll be less stressed — and your baby will be, too.

An Expectant Mom's Belly is the ‘Star of the Show'

Nicole Richie, Joel Madden Shower 100 Moms with Baby Gifts

Not many kids have a foundation launched in their honor before they're born. But that will be one of the many privileges bestowed upon Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's baby, due in January.

The couple hosted a surprise baby shower Monday for 100 expectant and new moms at the Los Angeles Free Clinic in Hollywood, where they handed out more than $200,000 worth of gifts. "The looks on their faces were priceless," Richie told reporters after the shower. "Some of them didn't even believe us [when they saw the gifts]. They thought we were joking."

The Richie Madden Children's Foundation (at richiemaddenfoundation.com), Madden said, was an idea the couple had when they found out they were expecting. "We grew up in Los Angeles," he said, "and we want our child to be a part of the community, and to know that there's a responsibility to help the community."

El Dorado Hills baby a Gap contest finalist

El Dorado Hills has a burgeoning celebrity on its hands. But don't expect the fame to go to Dylan Barnhart's head - he's only 14 months old, after all. Barnhart is a top-20 finalist in babyGap and GapKids' nationwide search for new clothing models, beating out more than 800,000 contestants. Voting for the winner will start Dec. 15.

There were no casting calls or photo shoots to crack the top 20, though. Barnhart entered her son in the competition simply by sitting at her computer. "I was browsing the Gap Web site and saw the online ad for the contest," she said. "I clicked on it, and all I had to do was upload a picture. It was really easy and really quick. Honestly, I forgot about the whole thing for a few weeks."

She forgot about it, that is, until she received an unexpected phone call.

Stylish Hats To Keep Baby Warm in Winter

Your sweet babe no longer has the benefit of a climate-controlled womb to protect her. She'll need a snuggly hat when venturing outdoors in cold weather. Tips for Finding American (Lead Free!) Toys this Holiday

Toxic toys are on the minds of parents and grandparents this holiday shopping season. Lead, the environmental scourge that has scandalously been painted on and then sent to babies, toddlers and children by some of the biggest, formerly most-trusted names in childhood play, can cause serious neurological damage to our young.

Definitely not something for under the tree.

The Daily Green has reached out to Made-in-USA toy manufacturers all over America to find out what's available this holiday season for kids whose parents are willing to take that extra step to keep their kids (and homes) safe from this deadly environmental toxin.

This article includes 4 Tips for Buying USA-made Toys.

The Basic Onesie Gets A Stylish Update

Without even trying, baby clothes can elicit a chorus of "oohs" and "aahs." But while ruffled dresses are cute and corduroy overalls are fine, the one baby fashion item parents can agree on is the onesie.

The two-in-one combo -- the best of a T-shirt and diaper cover meshed together -- gives parents easy access for diaper changes. They're no-frills, no-fuss (too bad the same can't always be said for the tot wearing them). Baby clothing labels have downsized the popular appeal of sassy statement tees and graphic prints and made them available in mini-you versions. Like other fashion trends, new prints and slogans appear all the time. Click here to read the full article.

Celeb: How Jessica Seinfeld Sneaks in Veggies

Jessica Seinfeld (yes, that's Jerry's Mrs.), mom of three -- Sascha, 6, Julian, 4, and Shepherd, 2 -- wanted mealtimes to be happy family events. But vegetables were getting in the way. Her kids refused to eat them. She begged, nagged, and pleaded. Then one evening, out of desperation, she stirred some pureed butternut squash she was making for the baby into the family's mac and cheese. It was the same color, and the kids never noticed they were eating a vegetable. "I realized then that I'd never have to say 'Eat your vegetables' again," says Seinfeld. Ever since, she's been mixing healthy vegetable purees -- foods the kids wouldn't touch otherwise -- into their fave dishes. And now she's written a cookbook so you can steal her sneaky tricks!

Parents turn to coaches to help with discipline

She is among a growing number of parent coaches nationally, while barely any existed a few years ago. More parents are seeking personally tailored answers to dilemmas. Many parent coaches follow the executive coaching model, which involves training business leaders to focus on positive leadership styles, and setting and achieving realistic goals. Some stress caution for parents with the dozens of options for coaching advertised online and in parent magazines. Coaching is not therapy. While some coaches are trained therapists or social workers, others simply are parents. Some make house calls, but many offer advice by phone or through online support groups at roughly $50 to $100 an hour.

Working Mothers Want to Stay on the Job, Reporting Favorable Work/Life Balance, Survey Finds

An overwhelming majority of working mothers report that, if there were no obstacles, they would continue working, and most say that their work/life balance is always right or is right most of the time, according to the results of new Accenture research.

In an online survey of more than 700 working mothers in mid- to senior-level management positions, nearly 90 percent of the respondents reported that, if there were no obstacles, they would work either full-time, part-time or under a flex-time arrangement (reported by 31 percent, 26 percent and 33 percent of respondents, respectively). Just 11 percent said they would not work at all.

Additionally, almost three-quarters (74 percent) say that their work/life balance is always right or is right most of the time, and nearly seven in 10 respondents (69 percent) believe that women can “have it all.”

According to respondents, flex-time, part-time and a modified work week are the three most commonly offered flexibility programs (cited by 61 percent, 51 percent and 44 percent of respondents, respectively). But, while 37 percent say their companies offer telecommuting as a work option, that program (at 50 percent) tops the wish list of respondents to whom it’s not offered.

Other programs that respondents want but that are not offered by their employers include flex-time, employer-provided alternative day care and a modified work week (cited by 47 percent, 44 percent and 40 percent of respondents, respectively).
