How to Teach Your Kid Anything

Parents are many things: Providers. Protectors. Boosters. Butlers. And, above all, teachers. If we can't instill a basic (and long) list of life skills in our children, we'll unleash substandard human beings on society. And that should be a felony.

We asked child-development experts across the country for strategies to break through the disinterest and resistance that usually stymie your efforts. Along the way, you'll cultivate a stronger, more satisfying relationship with your kids, which means they'll be more receptive to all the other wisdom you'll want to impart later in life.

Sure Shots: Your 18-Month Vaccine Timeline

When it comes to their tiniest patients, docs sure know how to stick it to 'em. Nearly every checkup during your baby's first two years ends with at least one shot, and at some visits, she may need to have as many as five injections. Seeing your little one cry out in pain can be torturous. So who can blame you for wondering: Is it really necessary -- or even safe -- for your infant to receive so many vaccines?

Proven Ways to Help Baby Sleep Through the Night

“Is your baby sleeping through the night yet?” may be the most annoying question for a new mom. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 70 to 80 percent of infants sleep through the night by nine months of age -- but that statistic provides little comfort when you’re up at 2 a.m. (again!) desperately rocking the baby. 14 Surprising Myths About Parenthood

Kids are undersize adults who are perfectly capable of holding down a job. Children should be seen and not heard. That's probably what you would have believed if you'd raised a family 100 years ago. Today, of course, you know such ideas are utter nonsense. So why are you still convinced that sugar makes your preschooler bounce off the walls? Or that bribing your child makes you a bad parent? Study: Whether mom works or not, the kids are OK

Parents who worry they are forever damaging their children by dropping them off at day-care every morning can find some comfort in a recent study that looked at academic achievement and behavioral issues of children whose mothers work outside the home versus those with moms who stay home.

An analysis of 50 years of research found that kids of working mothers don't turn out to be much different than those with stay-at-home moms, at least when it comes to academic achievement and behavior issues.

Before parenthood, couples head to 'babymoons'

Babymoons have been a travel trend for several years, according to Frommer's, the vacation guide publisher, even though the term is unfamiliar to many. It is generally defined as a last chance for parents-to-be to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect before life is overrun with diaper bags and sippy cups. A babymoon can also be taken after the baby is born as a time to bond with the infant.

When Is My Baby Ready To...

There may be very clear guidelines for much of newborn care, but once my baby was out of the first stages of infancy, things became a lot murkier. Suddenly I had a million new questions, and the answers weren't exactly obvious. "So, is it okay... now?" I found myself wondering every few weeks. Will it be safe when she reaches a certain age? Weight? Developmental stage?

In this article, pediatricians -- experienced moms themselves -- share what you need to know about safe sleeping, eating, playing, and more.

How much sleep do kids need?

Bedtime routines are important for children. Regardless of age, regular schedules and bedtime rituals greatly impact our ability to obtain sound sleep and function at our best. When it comes to children, this is especially true. Establishing and maintaining good sleep habits helps your child fall asleep, stay asleep, and awake rested and refreshed. It may also prevent future sleep problems. Good sleep habits can not only take the stress out of bedtime, but can help make it the special time it should be for you and your child.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for bedtime, and as always, there is individual variation. Your child is unique. If your routine is working, then it is probably best for you. That said, some approaches work better than others, and the following guidelines have been shown to be effective.

Get the white out of baby's first foods, pediatrician says

Concerned about increasing childhood obesity and growing rates of diabetes, some pediatricians want to change how babies eat.

Pediatrician Alan Greene is encouraging parents to abandon white rice cereal in favor of more nutritious brown rice cereals or even a homemade brown rice mash or vegetable purée. He is concerned that babies are getting hooked on the taste of highly processed white rice and flour, which could set them up for a lifetime of bad habits, such as a weakness for cakes and cookies.
