7 Pregnancy Superstitions
As I sat nervously in a clinic, waiting to undergo a round of genetic testing early in my pregnancy, my husband slipped out to a nearby 7-Eleven to get me something to drink. He also picked up a 99-cent ring from a basket by the cash register. The sign promised they were "lucky." When the test results were good, I vowed to wear the ring until my son was born. And I did, even as my poor finger swelled around it.
We tend to look for things to believe in during periods of high uncertainty and when the outcome is of huge importance," explains Erika Brady, Ph.D., a professor of folk studies at Western Kentucky University, in Bowling Green. And for all of the medical advancements women enjoy today, having a baby still comes with no guarantees.
In this article, readers share the traditions they abided by (or in some cases, rejected) while expecting.

Forever baby: You've got 12 months to capture the beauty of your child's infancy
We're not saying babies stuffed into green stockings and made to look like sprouting little pea pods don't make for adorable photographs. We're just saying the pea suits are a little superfluous.
If you want to capture babies in all of their doughy, moody, one-of-a-kind glory, props and costumes often matter less than simple nuts and bolts: lighting, proximity, facial expressions. We checked in with some folks who photograph babies for a living for tips on creating timeless images of your child before that first birthday - and the ability to walk - alter the landscape forever.

Prenatal Testing
Prenatal testing can be a multi-edged sword. Usually, test results are reassuring, which puts expectant parents’ minds at ease. But some people argue that because birth defects are rare, these tests in most cases cause undue stress; others argue that they allow people to create “designer” children. Then there are the parents who discover very real, sometimes dire, problems with their babies and face the decision of whether to keep or terminate a pregnancy. Testing is a difficult and confusing issue, and what’s right for one family may be entirely wrong for another.

How to Keep Baby Healthy This Winter
The common cold might be an inconvenience for you, but for your baby, it’s a big deal. (Have you ever tried to breathe and suck down milk while your nose was all stuffed up?) Unfortunately, babies are more susceptible than adults to just about every common winter illness, from colds to stomach bugs – and a virus that causes minor symptoms in adults could land your baby in the hospital.

Teen crisis: Should they friend parents on Facebook?
As the world's biggest social-networking site continues to grow, parents are joining — and invariably asking the kids to include them in their circle of online friends.
Many young people are horrified at the idea of parents seeing their posts — which may include racy photos or talk about who they're dating.
Parents may think it's a harmless way to keep up with what their children are up to. After all, child-safety advocates advise parents to keep tabs of their children's online activity. But teens are likely to view their parent's Facebook friending request as unnecessary prying into their personal lives.
